“Today it's me, tomorrow it's you”

I have a gig today which is quite different from my usual performances. I sang at a funeral. It’s funny how I sing in every celebration of life such as birthdays, weddings, and even retirement homes, but today’s event is a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of life. I recall one of my clients telling me that her mother had included me in her will. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, I must be lucky to have such a wealthy fan!” But her laughter soon dissipated my excitement as she revealed that her mother had wanted me to sing at her funeral. Even though it was a bit morbid, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony of it all. But such is life - unpredictable, fleeting, and full of surprises. As the Bible says...

Psalm 90:12 ESV

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

I heard a fascinating story from the Philippines about an individual who passed away and during his wake, the people who came to view his body in the coffin were either in a state of shock or crying frantically. It was discovered that the deceased had a great sense of humor, as he had inscribed the words “Today It’s Me Tomorrow it’s You” on his chest while lying in the casket. This incident left a deep impression on those who witnessed it, as it made them contemplate the inevitability of death and the transient nature of human life.

The contemplation arises: is life truly brief? However, the verity is that life is extensive and perpetual. The real query is where we will end up spending eternity. Will we be in the blissful abode of heaven, where life thrives, or will we be trapped in the gloomy abyss of hell, where there is only spiritual demise and perpetual darkness?
