Victory Is His

Just over a decade ago in the Philippines, my family faced a tough situation. We received a letter from the sheriff telling us we had to leave the house we’d called home for more than 20 years. We had just two weeks to pack up and move out. My parents hadn’t been the best at keeping up with the mortgage payments, but I wasn’t holding it against them – times had been tough. Left with no choice, we started packing up our things in boxes, bracing ourselves for the inevitable eviction day.

One night, I was praying and reading my Bible, and the Holy Spirit spoke to me through His word in Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

We forget one thing, and that is to pray. We prepared for the worst but have not asked who holds the victory. I said to myself, the deal is not yet done. We can still claim the house, I said. I got up. I asked my Mom and Sheena to get up, and we went outside the house. The neighbors probably got weirded out about what we were doing. The three of us prayed over our house and asked our Father in Heaven to claim the house for us. After our prayer outside, we went inside the house, laughed, ate, and slept peacefully.

The next day, a dear friend offered to lend us money to pay for our house, after she prayed for us and heard a message from the Lord to help us. She even offered us a ride to the office to pay our debt. This was an answered prayer. Additionally, my mom surrendered her life to Christ during this difficult time.

We can prepare our horses—this means our resources, our heart, our mind, and our strength—for many battles of life, but Victory is always determined by God. Victory belongs to Jesus. I firmly believe that more than reacquiring our house, God was after my family’s salvation. We believed as one, and so He gave us the ultimate gift: faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
